The first fold creates a double surface where each conic volume has a new skin to be transformed. This is achieved by folding along any geodesic of the cone, specifically one near the apex. The double skin is exposed by folding along a plane in the body of the conic form. The mirror plane that produces the 'collar' is limited only by self intersection. To elaborate on the system, additional duplication was achieved by folding across geodesic curves along the base of each cone. Being conical in shape, I applied the same rules of hinging at the bottom of the cone to hinging along the edge of the collar. This strategy created connections between adjacent cones in a field condition. While the field appears to be created of many discrete volumes, they unroll into a single connected sheet to be fabricated on flat-stock material and reduce assembly time by reducing components. The nature of design rules leads to many constraints. For example, each cone must be identical in its initial state (after all, they're a duplication of the origin cone), the bottom must remain flat and on the same plane, and the top collar must be truncated to the same plane. Within these constraints, subtle local variation is possible resulting in a global field impact. Although each cone is of the same height, the first geodesic hinge near the apex may vary. The geodesic cut creates a tear drop shape where the peak aligns with the construction seam which gives the cone a dominate orientation that can be manipulated through rotation. To fabricate with the logic of straight line paths, a script was developed to create thousands of random lines from predetermined spacing along the frame edges. The first fold creates a double surface where each conic volume has a new skin to be transformed. This is achieved by folding along any geodesic of the cone, specifically one near the apex. The double skin is exposed by folding along a plane in the body of the conic form. The mirror plane that produces the 'collar' is limited only by self intersection. To elaborate on the system, additional duplication was achieved by folding across geodesic curves along the base of each cone. Being conical in shape, I applied the same rules of hinging at the bottom of the cone to hinging along the edge of the collar. This strategy created connections between adjacent cones in a field condition. While the field appears to be created of many discrete volumes, they unroll into a single connected sheet to be fabricated on flat-stock material and reduce assembly time by reducing components. The nature of design rules leads to many constraints. For example, each cone must be identical in its initial state (after all, they're a duplication of the origin cone), the bottom must remain flat and on the same plane, and the top collar must be truncated to the same plane. Within these constraints, subtle local variation is possible resulting in a global field impact. Although each cone is of the same height, the first geodesic hinge near the apex may vary. The geodesic cut creates a tear drop shape where the peak aligns with the construction seam which gives the cone a dominate orientation that can be manipulated through rotation. The first fold creates a double surface where each conic volume has a new skin to be transformed. This is achieved by folding along any geodesic of the cone, specifically one near the apex. The double skin is exposed by folding along a plane in the body of the conic form. The mirror plane that produces the 'collar' is limited only by self intersection. To elaborate on the system, additional duplication was achieved by folding across geodesic curves along the base of each cone. This technique was of interest in the ability to create nested forms, where each cone must tuck into the adjacent form while sharing a surface.
